# Adam Whyte

## Biography

Adam Gowans Whyte (1875-1950) was a Scottish journalist, author, and translator, notably recognized for his significant contributions to scientific journalism and the freethought movement. Born in Glasgow, he pursued studies at the University of Glasgow before moving to London, where he established himself as a journalist. In 1899, Whyte co-founded the Rationalist Press Association (RPA), serving as one of its original directors until his death. He was a dedicated figure in the RPA, contributing extensively to its *Literary Guide* under the pseudonym "Protonius" in a section titled "The Open Window." Later, as the RPA's Literary Advisor, he played a crucial role in selecting titles for Watts & Co. and their Thinker's Library. Beyond his work with the RPA, Whyte also held the editorship of the *Electrical Industries* journal from 1901 until his retirement and authored several books, including *Electricity in Locomotion* and *The Story of the RPA*. He passed away in 1950, the last surviving founder of the Rationalist Press Association.
