# G. Chesterton

## Biography

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, born in London in 1874, was an influential English writer, philosopher, and Christian apologist. Though he initially studied art at Slade School, his true calling lay in literature and journalism. Chesterton became an incredibly prolific author, publishing around 80 books, numerous poems, short stories, and over 4,000 essays, often contributing weekly columns to The Daily News and The Illustrated London News for decades.

His vast output spanned diverse genres, from literary and social criticism to history, poetry, and detective fiction, most notably creating the beloved priest-detective Father Brown. Chesterton's writing was characterized by wit, paradox, and a robust defense of tradition and common sense. A prominent public intellectual, he engaged in lively debates with contemporaries like George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells. After a period of intellectual and spiritual exploration, Chesterton converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922, a faith he passionately articulated in works like Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. He died in 1936.
