# Fritz Leiber

## Biography

Fritz Leiber Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 24, 1910, to Shakespearean actors. Immersed in literature and theater from a young age, he briefly pursued acting before graduating from the University of Chicago and embarking on a prolific writing career. Leiber became a celebrated author across fantasy, science fiction, and horror genres. He is widely recognized for coining the term "sword-and-sorcery" and for his enduring Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series, which defined the subgenre. His diverse works also include pioneering urban horror stories and critically acclaimed science fiction novels like *Conjure Wife* and *The Big Time*. Throughout his career, Leiber earned numerous accolades, including multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and a Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America. He passed away in San Francisco on September 5, 1992, leaving a lasting legacy in speculative fiction.
