# Edwin Abbott

## Biography

Edwin Abbott Abbott was a distinguished English schoolmaster, theologian, and Anglican priest, born in London on December 20, 1838. His exceptional intellect was evident early in his education at the City of London School and St John's College, Cambridge, where he earned high honors across classics, mathematics, and theology. After a brief period as a master, he rose to become the headmaster of the City of London School in 1865, a position he held with distinction for over two decades.

Abbott is best known for his 1884 novella, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, a satirical and allegorical work that explored societal structures and geometric concepts. Beyond this celebrated book, he was a prolific author of theological discussions and literary studies, including a significant Shakespearian Grammar and works on Francis Bacon. He retired from his headmaster role in 1889 to devote his remaining years entirely to his literary and theological endeavors. Abbott passed away on October 12, 1926.
