# John Buchan

## Biography

John Buchan (1875-1940) was a distinguished Scottish novelist, historian, and statesman, born in Perth. Educated at Glasgow University and Oxford, he began a varied career as a barrister before serving as a private secretary in South Africa during the post-Boer War reconstruction. A prolific writer, Buchan authored over a hundred books, excelling in both fiction and non-fiction. He is most renowned for his thrilling adventure novels, particularly "The Thirty-Nine Steps," which introduced the popular character Richard Hannay, who appeared in several subsequent works. Beyond his literary pursuits, Buchan had a significant public life. He was a Member of Parliament for Scottish universities, worked as Director of Information during World War I, and later achieved the high office of Governor-General of Canada from 1935 until his death in Montreal in 1940. His diverse contributions left a lasting legacy in literature and public service.
