# R. Torrey

## Biography

Reuben Archer Torrey, born on January 28, 1856, in Hoboken, New Jersey, became a prominent American evangelist, pastor, educator, and author. After graduating from Yale University in 1878 and pursuing further theological studies in Germany, he was ordained a Congregational minister. Torrey initially served as a pastor in Ohio and as a home missionary in Minneapolis, where he founded several churches.

He is perhaps best known for his influential tenure as the second superintendent of the Moody Bible Institute from 1889 to 1908, and concurrently as pastor of the Chicago Avenue Church. Torrey embarked on extensive worldwide evangelistic campaigns, reaching audiences across Europe, Asia, and Australia, delivering powerful sermons. Later, he served as the first dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and pastor of the Church of the Open Door. A prolific writer, Torrey authored over forty books, leaving a lasting legacy through his teachings on prayer, evangelism, and the Holy Spirit. He passed away in 1928.
