# D. Lawrence

## Biography

David Herbert Lawrence was a prominent English novelist, short story writer, poet, and essayist, born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, on September 11, 1885. Raised in a working-class mining town, his early experiences heavily influenced his later exploration of class, industrialization, and human relationships. Lawrence's modernist works often delved into themes of emotional vitality, instinct, and sexuality, challenging societal conventions of his time. Among his most celebrated and often controversial novels are Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover, the latter famously subject to censorship trials for its explicit content. Throughout his life, Lawrence faced public scorn and misrepresentation due to his radical views and frank depictions of intimacy. He spent much of his later life in voluntary exile, describing it as a "savage pilgrimage," before his death from tuberculosis on March 2, 1930, in Vence, France, at the age of 44. His extensive body of work continues to provoke discussion and solidify his place as an influential 20th-century writer.
