# Edward Ellis

## Biography

Edward Sylvester Ellis, born on April 11, 1840, in Geneva, Ohio, was a prolific American author and educator. He began his professional life as a teacher after attending the State Normal School of New Jersey, eventually rising to positions as a school principal and superintendent in Trenton. In 1887, he was awarded an honorary Master of Arts from Princeton University. Ellis gained significant literary recognition with his early dime novel, "Seth Jones: Or, The Captives of the Frontier," published in 1860. This success prompted him to pursue writing full-time, leading to a career where he penned hundreds of books and articles. He utilized numerous pseudonyms while writing across genres such as juvenile fiction, Westerns, historical narratives, and early science fiction, including his notable Deerfoot novels and "The Steam Man of the Prairies." Ellis also served as an editor for publications like "Public Opinion" and children's magazines "Golden Days" and "Holiday." He passed away on June 20, 1916, in Cliff Island, Maine.
