# Frederik Pohl

## Biography

Frederik Pohl was an influential American science fiction writer, editor, and fan whose career spanned nearly 75 years. Born in New York City in 1919, he became deeply involved in the science fiction community at a young age, even co-founding the Futurians. Despite being a high school dropout, Pohl began editing magazines like *Astonishing Stories* and *Super Science Stories* before he turned twenty. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, he continued to shape the genre through his work as an editor for *Galaxy* and *If* magazines, earning multiple Hugo Awards for his editorial leadership. As an author, Pohl was celebrated for his insightful social criticism and exploration of technology's future impact, often in collaboration with C.M. Kornbluth on works like *The Space Merchants*. He penned numerous novels, including *Man Plus* and the acclaimed Heechee series, which began with *Gateway*, garnering multiple Hugo, Nebula, and other prestigious awards throughout his prolific career. Pohl passed away in 2013.
