# T. Eliot

## Biography

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. Descended from a prominent New England family, he developed an early passion for reading. He studied at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris, and Merton College, Oxford. In 1914, Eliot moved to England, where he eventually settled, becoming a British subject in 1927.

Eliot emerged as a pivotal figure in modernist poetry, transforming English-language verse with his innovative style and themes. His early work, including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915), established his unique voice. His seminal poem, The Waste Land (1922), is considered a masterpiece that captured the disillusionment of the post-World War I era. He also distinguished himself as a literary critic, dramatist, and publisher, notably as a director at Faber and Faber. In 1948, T. S. Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his profound contribution to contemporary poetry. He died in London on January 4, 1965.
