## Biography

Andrew Cecil Bradley (1851-1935) was an influential English literary scholar and critic, primarily renowned for his profound work on Shakespeare. Born in Clapham, Surrey, he was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself before embarking on a notable academic career. Bradley held professorships at the University of Liverpool, the University of Glasgow, and finally, the prestigious Oxford professorship of poetry from 1901 to 1906.

His most celebrated publication, *Shakespearean Tragedy* (1904), offered detailed psychological analyses of Shakespeare's tragic heroes, particularly in plays like *Hamlet*, *Othello*, *King Lear*, and *Macbeth*. Though his approach of treating characters as real people sometimes drew later criticism, his insightful and lucid prose significantly shaped twentieth-century Shakespearean studies. Other notable works include *Oxford Lectures on Poetry* and *A Commentary on Tennyson's In Memoriam*. Bradley never married and died in London, leaving behind a legacy as a foundational figure in modern literary criticism.
