# Therese Dillmont

## Biography

Therese de Dillmont was an influential Austrian needleworker, designer, and writer, born in Wiener Neustadt in 1846. Educated in Vienna, she attended an embroidery school and, with her sister Franziska, later opened an embroidery school and shop. In 1884, de Dillmont moved to France, beginning her significant association with the textile firm DMC. Her groundbreaking work, "Encyclopedia of Needlework," published in 1886, became a seminal text in the field. This comprehensive guide, translated into seventeen languages, offered clear instructions and illustrations, establishing her as a pivotal figure in the international hobby needlework movement of the late nineteenth century. She also established several needlework shops across major European cities, including Paris, London, and Berlin. Even after her death in 1890, DMC continued to publish numerous books under her esteemed name, cementing her lasting legacy in textile arts.
