# Carlo Collodi

## Biography

Carlo Collodi was the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini, an Italian author and journalist born in Florence on November 24, 1826. His father was a cook and his mother a seamstress, both working for an aristocratic family. He adopted the surname Collodi from his mother's hometown, where he spent much of his childhood. Initially pursuing a religious education, he later embarked on a career in journalism and became a keen supporter of Italian unification, founding satirical newspapers and serving in the Tuscan army during the Wars of Independence. Collodi eventually shifted his focus to children's literature, translating French fairy tales and writing educational texts. His most enduring work, "The Adventures of Pinocchio," began as a serialized story in 1881 and was published as a book in 1883. He passed away in Florence on October 26, 1890, before witnessing the immense global success of his beloved wooden puppet.
