# James Cooper

## Biography

James Fenimore Cooper was a prolific American novelist, born in Burlington, New Jersey, on September 15, 1789. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by his father, William Cooper. This upbringing in a burgeoning American wilderness profoundly influenced his later literary works. He attended Yale but was expelled for youthful pranks. Following a stint in the U.S. Navy, which provided inspiration for his nautical tales, Cooper embarked on a writing career. He became the first major American novelist, achieving international fame for his historical romances depicting frontier life and early American themes. His most celebrated contributions are the five-volume Leatherstocking Tales, featuring the iconic wilderness scout Natty Bumppo, also known as Hawkeye. These novels, including "The Last of the Mohicans," solidified his reputation and significantly shaped American literature. Cooper also distinguished himself as a keen social critic. He passed away on September 14, 1851, in Cooperstown.
