# Austin Craig

## Biography

Austin C. Craig was an American historian and educator, born in Eddytown, New York, on February 22, 1872. He made significant contributions to early 20th-century Philippine historiography, with a particular focus on the life and legacy of the national hero, José Rizal. Craig arrived in the Philippines in 1904 as part of American educational efforts, later becoming a professor of history at the University of the Philippines. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Cornell University and a Master of Arts from the University of Rochester. His seminal works include "Lineage, Life and Labors of José Rizal, Philippine Patriot" and "A Thousand Years of Philippine History Before the Coming of the Spaniards." Craig's meticulous research and dedication to documenting Rizal's life shaped an early comprehensive English-language understanding of the patriot. He passed away on February 11, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, leaving behind a scholarly legacy recognized by a street named in his honor in Manila.
