# Walter Scott

## Biography

Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist, poet, and historian, born in Edinburgh in 1771. Though trained and practicing as a lawyer, holding positions such as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute, his literary ambitions blossomed early. Initially gaining renown for his narrative poems like "The Lady of the Lake" and "Marmion," Scott later pioneered the historical novel. His "Waverley" novels, published anonymously at first, captivated readers across Europe and established him as an international bestseller. Works such as "Ivanhoe," "Rob Roy," and "The Heart of Midlothian" cemented his reputation for vivid historical settings and compelling characters. Scott’s prolific writing and influence significantly shaped European and American literature, making him one of Scotland's most celebrated authors. He passed away in 1832.
