# William Sanger

## Biography

William W. Sanger was an American physician born in Hartford, Connecticut, on August 10, 1819. After studying medicine in Virginia, he moved to New York City and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1846. He then served as the first resident physician at Blackwell's Island Hospital, where he oversaw the care of indigent patients. Sanger is most recognized for his seminal work, *The History of Prostitution: Its Extent, Causes, and Effects Throughout the World*, published in 1858. This detailed empirical study was commissioned by the New York City Board of Alms-House Governors and involved interviews with approximately 2,000 women to document the scope of urban prostitution. After resigning from public service in 1860, he maintained a private medical practice in New York City until his death on May 8, 1872.
