# Saki

## Biography

Hector Hugh Munro, better known by his pen name Saki, was a British writer born on December 18, 1870, in Akyab, Burma. After his mother's death when he was young, he was sent to England and raised by his strict aunts, an experience that heavily influenced the tyrannical figures in his later fiction. Saki began his career as a journalist and foreign correspondent before gaining renown for his witty, mischievous, and often macabre short stories. His work frequently satirized Edwardian society, exposing its pretension and folly with a sharp, epigrammatic style. Notable collections include Reginald, The Chronicles of Clovis, and Beasts and Super-Beasts, featuring beloved tales like "The Open Window." He is considered a master of the short story, with his unique blend of humor and dark undertones. Saki enlisted in the British Army during World War I despite being overage and was killed by a sniper in France on November 14, 1916.
