## Biography

António Pereira Cândido de Figueiredo (1846-1925) was a prominent Portuguese intellectual, known for his diverse contributions as a lawyer, civil servant, writer, lexicographer, grammarian, and philologist. Born in Lobão da Beira, Portugal, he initially pursued theology before graduating in law from the University of Coimbra. Although ordained a priest, he later left the clergy to practice law, serving for over forty years in the Ministry of Justice, eventually reaching the rank of assistant director-general.

Figueiredo's literary career was extensive, marked by his dedication to the Portuguese language. He is most recognized for his monumental work, the "Novo Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa," first published in 1899 and undergoing numerous editions. He also authored works of fiction, such as "Lisboa no ano 3000," a piece of social critique, and translated various linguistic and philological texts. A respected figure in academic circles, he was a founding member of the Lisbon Geographic Society and a corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, serving as president of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon at the time of his death.
