# Heinrich Hoffmann

## Biography

Heinrich Hoffmann was a German psychiatrist, physician, and influential writer, born in Frankfurt am Main on June 13, 1809. After training in medicine, he established a practice and later served as the director of the city's Institute for the Epileptic and Insane, where he advocated for the humane treatment of his patients. Hoffmann is most famously remembered for his groundbreaking children's book, Der Struwwelpeter, or Slovenly Peter, which he originally created in 1845 as a Christmas gift for his son. Dissatisfied with the existing children's literature, he penned and illustrated a collection of cautionary tales that, despite their dark humor, quickly gained immense popularity and were translated into numerous languages. Though he wrote other works, none achieved the enduring success of Der Struwwelpeter, solidifying his legacy in children's literature. He passed away in his hometown on September 20, 1894.
