## Biography

Wilhelm Busch was a celebrated German humorist, poet, illustrator, and painter, born in 1832 in Wiedensahl. He is widely recognized for his pioneering illustrated tales, which are often considered early precursors to modern comic strips. After initial studies in mechanical engineering, Busch pursued art at academies in Düsseldorf, Antwerp, and Munich. His distinctive style combined simple, expressive drawings with witty, satirical verse. Through his work, Busch skillfully drew upon folk humor and his extensive knowledge of German culture to critique and satirize contemporary life, religious piety, and societal hypocrisy. His most famous creation, Max and Moritz, published in 1865, became a foundational influence for future comic artists, notably inspiring The Katzenjammer Kids. Busch’s extensive body of work, characterized by its sharp wit and visual ingenuity, continues to be cherished and celebrated today, with institutions like the Wilhelm Busch Museum preserving his enduring artistic legacy. He passed away in 1908.
