# Joseph Samachson

## Biography

Joseph Samachson was an American scientist and prolific writer, known for his diverse contributions to both scientific literature and popular fiction. Born in Trenton, New Jersey on October 13, 1906, Samachson pursued an academic path, earning a Ph.D. in chemistry from Yale University and working as a research chemist and assistant professor. His passion for storytelling led him into the world of writing, where he became a prominent figure in comic books and science fiction.

Beginning his tenure at DC Comics in 1942, Samachson contributed to various titles, including Action Comics and Detective Comics. He is widely recognized as the co-creator of the iconic character Martian Manhunter, introduced in 1955. Beyond comics, he penned numerous science fiction stories and novels under pseudonyms such as William Morrison and Brett Sterling, publishing in pulp magazines like Startling Stories. Collaborating with his wife, Dorothy Samachson, he also authored non-fiction works on subjects ranging from theater and music to archaeology. Samachson passed away in June 1980 from complications of Parkinson's disease.
