# Carl Clausewitz

## Biography

Carl von Clausewitz was a Prussian general and influential military theorist, born in Burg, near Magdeburg, in 1780. He began his military service at the age of twelve, participating in the Prussian army's campaigns during the French Revolution and later in the Napoleonic Wars. These experiences deeply informed his analytical approach to conflict. Clausewitz is primarily known for his seminal, though incomplete, work "Vom Kriege" (On War), which was published posthumously by his wife, Marie von Brühl, in 1832. This treatise offered a profound philosophical and political examination of warfare. He famously asserted that "war is the continuation of politics by other means," highlighting the inseparable link between military action and political objectives. Clausewitz's theories emphasized the crucial role of moral and psychological factors in battle, a contrast to contemporary thought that often prioritized only physical forces. His enduring insights continue to be studied and discussed, cementing his legacy as one of history's most significant military thinkers. He passed away in 1831.
