# John Bunyan

## Biography

John Bunyan was born in Elstow, near Bedford, England, in 1628, to a tinker family. He followed his father into the trade, experiencing a rebellious youth marked by swearing and blasphemy. After his marriage and a period of spiritual struggle, he underwent a profound religious conversion and became a passionate nonconformist preacher. In 1660, with the Restoration of King Charles II, Bunyan was arrested for preaching without official permission and spent over twelve years in Bedford Gaol. During his imprisonment, he wrote several works, most notably his spiritual autobiography, *Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners*, and began his enduring Christian allegory, *The Pilgrim's Progress*. Released in 1672, he continued to preach and write, publishing the second part of *The Pilgrim's Progress* in 1684 and *The Holy War* in 1682. He died in London in 1688.
