# James, Knowles

## Biography

Sir James Knowles, born in London in 1831, was a distinguished English architect and editor with a notable literary career. He initially trained in architecture, designing several churches and other buildings, but his contributions to literature and journalism left a more enduring mark. Knowles was particularly close to the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and was instrumental in founding the Metaphysical Society, which aimed to bridge the divide between religion and science.

He gained significant influence as an editor, taking the helm of the *Contemporary Review* in 1870. Later, in 1877, he established *The Nineteenth Century*, a prominent monthly review to which "And After" was added in 1901. These periodicals became influential platforms for intellectual discourse. As an author, Knowles is perhaps best known for his work, *The Story of King Arthur*, published in 1860. He received a knighthood in 1904 for his extensive contributions to public life and letters. Sir James Knowles passed away in 1908.
