# Leopold, Sacher-Masoch

## Biography

Leopold, Ritter von Sacher-Masoch was an Austrian nobleman, writer, and journalist, born in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) in 1836. He studied law, history, and mathematics at Graz University, earning a doctorate in history before becoming a lecturer. Soon, he dedicated himself to writing, gaining renown for his romantic stories depicting Galician life and the diverse ethnic groups within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His works often explored utopian humanist and socialist ideals.

Sacher-Masoch is best known for his 1870 novella, Venus in Furs, a part of his unfinished series The Legacy of Cain. This work, which explored themes of love, power, and contractual submission, led to the coining of the term "masochism" by psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Sacher-Masoch reportedly disliked this association, as it overshadowed his broader literary contributions. He also published under pseudonyms like Charlotte Arand and Zoe von Rodenbach. In his later years, his mental health declined, and he spent time under psychiatric care before his death in 1895.
