# Edmund Spenser

## Biography

Edmund Spenser, born in London around 1552, became one of the most significant poets of the English Renaissance. He received his education at Merchant Taylors' School and later Pembroke College, Cambridge. After completing his studies, Spenser embarked on a career that combined public service with his passion for poetry. He served as secretary to the Bishop of Rochester and then in Ireland as a colonial administrator, a role that shaped some of his later writings.

Spenser's most celebrated work is The Faerie Queene, a lengthy allegorical epic poem dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. This ambitious work showcased his inventive use of language and introduced the distinctive nine-line Spenserian stanza. Other notable publications include The Shepheardes Calender, a collection of pastoral poetry, and Amoretti and Epithalamion, a sonnet sequence and marriage poem. Despite facing hardships, including losing his Irish home during a rebellion, Spenser's dedication to his craft remained. He died in London in 1599 and was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner, cementing his legacy as a master of English verse.
