# James Blount

## Biography

James Henderson Blount (1837-1903) was an American politician, soldier, and author from Georgia. After serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, he embarked on a distinguished political career, representing Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives for two decades. Blount became particularly known for his work on foreign relations, chairing the House Committee on Foreign Relations. Following his congressional service, President Grover Cleveland appointed him a special commissioner to investigate the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. His findings, detailed in the influential Blount Report, concluded that the overthrow was illegal and engineered by American interests. Blount later drew upon his extensive experience and knowledge of international affairs to author "The American Occupation of the Philippines 1898-1912," a critical examination of American colonial policy.
