# Robert Chambers

## Biography

Robert William Chambers was an American artist and writer, born on May 26, 1865, in Brooklyn, New York. He initially pursued a career in art, studying at the Art Students' League and later at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian in Paris. His illustrations were showcased at the Salon and he sold work to magazines like Life and Vogue. Chambers transitioned to writing in his twenties, publishing his first novel, In the Quarter, in 1894. He gained significant renown for his influential 1895 collection of weird short stories, The King in Yellow, which profoundly impacted the horror and fantasy genres and inspired later writers such as H.P. Lovecraft. While known for his supernatural tales, Chambers also enjoyed a highly successful literary career writing romantic fiction, historical novels, and even some science fiction, with many of his works achieving bestseller status. He married Elsa Vaughn Moller in 1898 and had a son, Robert Husted Chambers, who also became an author. Robert W. Chambers died on December 16, 1933, in New York City.
