# Edmond Rostand

## Biography

Edmond Rostand was a renowned French poet and dramatist, born on April 1, 1868, in Marseille. He hailed from a prosperous and cultured family and, despite initially studying law, he pursued his passion for writing. Rostand became a prominent figure in the neo-romantic movement, contrasting with the prevailing naturalistic theatre of his time. He is best remembered for his iconic 1897 play, Cyrano de Bergerac, a verse drama that garnered him international acclaim and remains a staple of the stage. Other notable works include Les Romanesques and L'Aiglon, which provided celebrated roles for leading actors like Sarah Bernhardt. Rostand's lyrical writing and blend of comedy and pathos earned him significant recognition, including election as the youngest member ever to the French Academy in 1901. He was married to poet Rosemonde Gérard, with whom he had two sons. Rostand passed away in Paris on December 2, 1918, a victim of the flu pandemic.
