# Benedictus Spinoza

## Biography

Benedictus de Spinoza, born Baruch Spinoza in Amsterdam on November 24, 1632, was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese-Jewish descent. His family had fled persecution in Portugal, settling in the more tolerant Dutch Republic. Spinoza received a traditional Jewish education but developed unorthodox views, leading to his excommunication from the Jewish community in 1656 at the age of 23.

Following his expulsion, he supported himself as a lens grinder, a profession that likely contributed to his early death from lung illness at 44. Spinoza dedicated his life to philosophical inquiry, becoming a prominent figure in 17th-century Rationalism and a forerunner of the Enlightenment. Influenced by René Descartes, his major works include "Ethics" and "A Theologico-Political Treatise," both published posthumously. These writings challenged traditional religious and philosophical doctrines, advocating for reason, individual liberty, and a pantheistic understanding of God, where God and nature are one. His radical ideas profoundly influenced subsequent intellectual thought.
