# Joseph Le Fanu

## Biography

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was an influential Irish writer of Gothic and horror fiction, born in Dublin in 1814. He pursued legal studies at Trinity College Dublin but ultimately gravitated towards a career in journalism and literature. Le Fanu owned and edited several newspapers, including the Dublin University Magazine, where many of his stories first appeared. He became a master of the ghost story and sensation novel, renowned for his intricate plots and atmospheric prose. His most celebrated works include the vampire novella Carmilla, collected in In a Glass Darkly, and the novels Uncle Silas and The House by the Churchyard. Following the death of his wife in 1858, Le Fanu became increasingly reclusive, earning him the nickname "the Invisible Prince." His dark romanticism and psychological depth profoundly influenced later horror writers, including Bram Stoker. Le Fanu died in Dublin in 1873, leaving a significant legacy in the Victorian supernatural genre.
