## Biography

Thucydides, an ancient Athenian historian and general, was born around 460 BCE into a wealthy family with ties to Thrace. Growing up in the intellectual hub of Periclean Athens, he observed the political landscape of his time with a detached yet keen eye. His monumental work, "History of the Peloponnesian War," offers a meticulous chronicle of the protracted conflict between Athens and Sparta from 431 to 404 BCE.

He began collecting material at the war's onset, recognizing its historical significance. In 424 BCE, while serving as an Athenian general, his failure to prevent the capture of Amphipolis by the Spartans resulted in twenty years of exile. This enforced separation from Athens allowed him to gather information from both warring factions, contributing to the remarkable objectivity of his narrative. Thucydides is widely regarded as the "father of scientific history" due to his rigorous emphasis on empirical evidence, cause-and-effect analysis, and his deliberate exclusion of divine intervention from historical explanations. His enduring legacy rests on his profound insights into human nature, power politics, and the consequences of war.
