# Frances Burnett

## Biography

Frances Hodgson Burnett was a prolific British-American novelist and playwright, best known for her beloved children's classics. Born Frances Eliza Hodgson in Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849, her family experienced financial hardship after her father's death. In 1865, the family immigrated to the United States, settling in Tennessee. Burnett began writing at age nineteen to help support her family, successfully publishing stories in various magazines.

She married Dr. Swan Moses Burnett in 1873, and they had two sons. Although she wrote many adult novels and plays, often focusing on sentimental and romantic themes, her enduring legacy stems from her works for younger readers. Her most celebrated novels include *Little Lord Fauntleroy* (1886), *A Little Princess* (1905), and *The Secret Garden* (1911). Burnett divided her later life between England and the United States, continuing to write amidst personal challenges, including the loss of her eldest son. She passed away on October 29, 1924, in Plandome, New York.
