## Biography

Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil, was a renowned Roman poet born on October 15, 70 BCE, near Mantua, Italy. Hailing from a modest farming family, his early life in the Italian countryside profoundly influenced his later works. He received a comprehensive education in Cremona, Milan, and Rome, studying Greek and Roman authors, rhetoric, and philosophy.

Virgil’s literary career saw the creation of three seminal works. His early Eclogues explored pastoral themes, reflecting a deep reverence for rural life. This was followed by the Georgics, a didactic poem celebrating agriculture and dedicated to Gaius Maecenas, a close associate of Emperor Augustus. His most celebrated achievement is the epic poem, the Aeneid, which recounts the mythical origins of Rome and aimed to define Rome's divine destiny. Virgil spent eleven years on the Aeneid, though it remained unfinished at his death on September 21, 19 BCE, in Brundisium. His dying wish to have it burned was famously overridden by Augustus, securing its enduring legacy and significant influence on Western literature.
