# Horace Walpole

## Biography

Horace Walpole, born in London in 1717, was an influential English writer, politician, and art historian, the youngest son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. Educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, he embarked on a Grand Tour that enriched his artistic sensibilities. Walpole is primarily remembered for his groundbreaking novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), which is widely considered the first Gothic novel in the English language, pioneering a new genre of dark romance and supernatural themes.

Beyond his literary contributions, Walpole was a passionate antiquarian and an innovative architect. He transformed his Twickenham villa into Strawberry Hill House, a whimsical Gothic Revival mansion that became a cultural hub and spurred a new architectural trend. His extensive correspondence, comprising thousands of letters, offers invaluable insights into 18th-century society, politics, and culture, revealing his sharp wit and keen observations. Though he served as a Member of Parliament for many years, his literary and artistic pursuits remained his true calling. Walpole died in 1797, leaving a lasting legacy as a cultural pioneer.
