# Saint, Augustine

## Biography

Aurelius Augustinus, known as Saint Augustine of Hippo, was born in 354 AD in Tagaste, Numidia, in present-day Algeria. His mother, Monica, was a devout Christian, while his father, Patricius, was a pagan. Augustine received a comprehensive education, excelling in rhetoric, a field he later taught in Carthage, Rome, and Milan. Initially pursuing a life of worldly ambition and intellectual curiosity, he explored various philosophies and beliefs, including Manichaeism, before experiencing a profound conversion to Christianity in 386 AD. Baptized by Saint Ambrose, he returned to North Africa, eventually becoming bishop of Hippo Regius in 396 AD, a position he held until his death in 430 AD during the Vandal siege of the city. As bishop, Augustine became one of the most significant Christian thinkers and prolific writers, shaping Western theology and philosophy for centuries. His most celebrated works include his autobiography, Confessions, and the monumental theological treatise, The City of God, both of which continue to be widely studied.
