# Susan Glaspell

## Biography

Susan Glaspell was an American playwright, novelist, journalist, and actress, born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1876. After graduating from Drake University, she began her career as a newspaper reporter in Des Moines. Glaspell later dedicated herself to fiction writing, publishing numerous short stories and novels, often exploring contemporary social issues and women's experiences.

In 1915, she co-founded the groundbreaking Provincetown Players with her husband, George Cram Cook, establishing the first modern American theatre company. Glaspell became a prominent figure in the little theatre movement, writing acclaimed one-act plays like "Trifles." Her works were known for their experimental nature and sympathetic portrayal of characters facing societal constraints. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1931 for her play *Alison's House*. Glaspell continued to write until her death in 1948, leaving behind a significant body of work that influenced American literature and theater.
