## Biography

Hans Christian Andersen was a celebrated Danish author, born into poverty in Odense, Denmark, on April 2, 1805. The son of a shoemaker and a washerwoman, his early life was marked by hardship. At fourteen, he moved to Copenhagen, hoping to find work in the theater, enduring years of struggle before a patron sponsored his education. Andersen initially gained literary recognition with a short story in 1829, and his novel The Improvisatore further established his name. However, it was his groundbreaking literary fairy tales, beginning in 1835, that brought him international acclaim. Classics such as "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Emperor's New Clothes" redefined the genre, blending whimsy with profound human insights. A prolific writer, he also penned novels, plays, poems, and travelogues. Andersen traveled extensively, finding inspiration across Europe, and his works were translated into numerous languages, cementing his legacy as a global literary figure. He passed away in Copenhagen on August 4, 1875, leaving behind a timeless collection of stories that continue to enchant readers worldwide.
