Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist and short story writer, celebrated for her detailed portrayals of Victorian society. Born in London, she spent much of her childhood in Knutsford, Cheshire, a town that inspired her popular novel *Cranford*. In 1832, she married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister, and settled in industrial Manchester, an experience that heavily influenced her writing. Her first novel, *Mary Barton* (1848), brought her acclaim for its realistic depiction of working-class life. Gaskell explored themes of social class, industrialization, and women's roles in works like *North and South* and the controversial *Ruth*.
