# William Strunk

## Biography

William Strunk Jr. was an American professor and author, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 1, 1869. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. from Cornell University, he embarked on a distinguished academic career. Strunk taught English at Cornell for 46 years, profoundly influencing generations of students. He is best known as the original author of The Elements of Style, a seminal guide to clear and concise writing, first privately published in 1918 for his classes. This compact volume, later famously revised and expanded by his former student E.B. White, became an enduring resource for writers. Strunk also authored English Metres in 1922 and edited various literary works. He served as a literary consultant for the 1936 film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. William Strunk Jr. passed away on September 26, 1946, in Poughkeepsie, New York, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of English composition.
