# Thomas Hardy

## Biography

Thomas Hardy, born in Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, England, in 1840, rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent English novelist and poet. Encouraged by his well-read mother, he pursued an education, demonstrating academic potential, particularly in Latin. Initially trained as an architect, a profession he practiced in London and Dorset, Hardy ultimately dedicated himself to literature. His early novels, set in the semi-fictional Wessex region, explored themes of rural life, social class, and tragic circumstances, often drawing criticism for their frankness. Notable works include *Far from the Madding Crowd*, *Tess of the D'Urbervilles*, and *Jude the Obscure*. Though he considered himself primarily a poet, his poetry gained widespread acclaim later in his career. His personal life saw two marriages, first to Emma Lavinia Gifford and later to Florence Emily Dugdale. Hardy died in 1928, leaving behind a significant literary legacy.
