# Benjamin D'Ooge

## Biography

Benjamin Leonard D'Ooge (1860-1940) was a prominent American classical scholar and educator, born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He pursued his higher education at the University of Michigan, earning both a Bachelor of Arts in 1881 and a Master of Arts in 1884. Furthering his studies in Europe, D'Ooge received his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bonn in 1901.

His career was largely dedicated to Latin instruction, a field in which he excelled and deeply influenced. After early roles as a high school principal and a Latin instructor at the University of Michigan, he joined Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1886. There, he served as a professor of Latin and department chair until 1937, becoming a beloved figure. D'Ooge advocated for the "Doctrine of Interest," believing that teaching should engage students with the cultural life of the ancient world. He authored several influential textbooks, most notably "Latin for Beginners," a widely used work designed to prepare students for reading classical texts. He died in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
