# Harold Speed

## Biography

Harold Speed (1872–1957) was an English painter and influential writer on art, born in London to an architect father. Initially following in his father's footsteps, he studied architecture at the Royal College of Art before redirecting his passion to painting. He further honed his skills at the Royal Academy Schools from 1891 to 1896, where he earned a gold medal and a prestigious traveling scholarship, which allowed him to study art across Europe.

Speed became a respected figure in the art world, exhibiting his works, including portraits, figures, and historical subjects, at the Royal Academy for many years. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and served as Master of the Art Workers' Guild. Beyond his painting, Speed is widely remembered for his highly regarded instructional books, which continue to be valuable resources for artists. His notable works include "The Science and Practice of Drawing" (1913), "The Science and Practice of Oil Painting" (1924), and "What is the Good of Art?" (1936). He lived and worked primarily in London and Oxfordshire.
