# Immanuel Kant

## Biography

Immanuel Kant, born in Königsberg, Prussia, in 1724, became one of the most influential German philosophers of the Enlightenment. He spent his entire life in his hometown, studying and later lecturing at the University of Königsberg. Though he maintained a famously strict daily routine, he was also known as a witty conversationalist and popular lecturer. After working for years as a private tutor and then an unsalaried lecturer, Kant secured a professorship of logic and metaphysics, a position he held until his retirement. His profound and systematic works, including the "Critique of Pure Reason," published when he was 57, reshaped philosophy, profoundly influencing epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics. Kant's ideas sought to reconcile rationalism and empiricism, profoundly impacting subsequent Western thought. He died in Königsberg in 1804.
