# David Hume

## Biography

David Hume, a pivotal figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, was born in Edinburgh in 1711. From an early age, he showed a profound aversion to a legal career, instead dedicating himself to philosophy and literature. His groundbreaking work, A Treatise of Human Nature, published between 1739 and 1740, initially received little public attention, though it is now considered one of his most important contributions to Western philosophy. Hume later achieved considerable success as a historian with his multi-volume History of England, which became a bestseller. He also penned important philosophical works such as An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals. Known for his radical empiricism and philosophical skepticism, Hume’s ideas profoundly influenced subsequent thinkers, including Immanuel Kant. Throughout his life, he also held various diplomatic and administrative positions, including librarian for the Faculty of Advocates. Hume passed away peacefully in 1776, with his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion published posthumously.
