# Adam Smith

## Biography

Adam Smith was a prominent Scottish philosopher and economist, born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1723. Although his exact birth date is unknown, he was baptized on June 5, 1723. Smith attended the University of Glasgow at fourteen, where he was profoundly influenced by Francis Hutcheson. He later studied at Balliol College, Oxford, though he found the instruction there less stimulating. Returning to Scotland, he delivered acclaimed public lectures in Edinburgh, fostering connections with leading figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, including David Hume.

In 1751, Smith became a professor at the University of Glasgow, holding chairs in logic and then moral philosophy. During this period, he published his first major work, *The Theory of Moral Sentiments*, in 1759. He later resigned his professorship to tutor the Duke of Buccleuch, traveling across Europe and meeting notable intellectuals. His most famous work, *An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations*, a foundational text of modern political economy, was published in 1776. Smith, who never married, was known for his dedication to scholarship and continued to revise his works until his death in Edinburgh in 1790.
