# Charles Darwin

## Biography

Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, renowned for his contributions to evolutionary biology. Born in Shrewsbury, England, in 1809, Darwin initially pursued studies in medicine and theology, though his true passion lay in natural history. A pivotal five-year voyage aboard HMS Beagle, beginning in 1831, transformed his scientific understanding. During this expedition, he meticulously observed and collected diverse species and fossils, particularly in the Galapagos Islands, which profoundly shaped his developing ideas.

Upon his return, Darwin dedicated years to research and refinement, culminating in his groundbreaking work, "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection," published in 1859. This seminal book introduced his theory that all life has descended from common ancestors and that evolution is driven by natural selection, a process where advantageous traits are passed to offspring. While initially controversial, Darwin's theory fundamentally reshaped biology and our understanding of life on Earth. He continued to publish extensively on related topics, including human evolution. Darwin passed away in 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
