# George Eliot

## Biography

Mary Ann Evans, known to the world by her pen name George Eliot, was one of the foremost English novelists of the Victorian era. Born in Warwickshire in 1819, she received an unusually extensive education for a woman of her time, fostering a sharp intellect and a deep engagement with philosophy and literature. Before gaining fame as a novelist, Eliot worked as a journalist and translator, notably as an assistant editor for The Westminster Review. She adopted a male pseudonym to ensure her serious work would be taken seriously in a male-dominated literary world. Her novels, including classics like Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and her masterpiece Middlemarch, are celebrated for their profound psychological realism, intricate character development, and vivid depictions of provincial English life. Eliot's personal life was unconventional for the period, particularly her long-term relationship with the married George Henry Lewes. She died in 1880, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking fiction that continues to be studied and admired.
