## Biography

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, to professional actors. Orphaned before the age of three, he was taken in by John and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia, though never formally adopted. Poe attended the University of Virginia but was forced to leave due to gambling debts and his foster father's refusal to pay. After a brief stint in the Army and at West Point, he dedicated himself to writing. He published his first collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827. Poe worked as an editor for several literary journals, including the Southern Literary Messenger, where he became known for his sharp critical reviews. He married his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836. Poe is celebrated for his dark, mysterious tales and poetry, such as "The Raven," and is considered a pioneer of the detective fiction genre and a significant figure in American Romanticism and Gothic literature. He died in Baltimore in 1849.
